How to Plan a Luxury Wedding on a Middle Class Budget
Let me tell you what luxury actually means to me — because it has nothing to do with how much money you spend.
Luxury is an experience. It is the feeling a guest has when they walk into your venue. It is the way the light hits the room. It is the warmth in the air, the intentionality in every detail, the sense that this event was built with care and purpose. You can create that feeling at almost any budget. And I am going to show you exactly how.
The Two Design Elements That Change Everything
If I had to choose two things that make the biggest visual impact for the least amount of money — every single time — it would be drapery and candles.
Every time.
Drapery transforms a space instantly. It softens hard edges. It adds dimension. It takes a plain ballroom or a simple outdoor venue and makes it feel like somewhere intentional was created just for this day. And compared to florals the price difference is significant.
Candles and lighting do something even more powerful — they change the entire atmosphere of a room. The more candles and lighting you have, the warmer and more intimate your space feels. Dim warm lighting makes any venue feel romantic and elevated regardless of what else is in the room. It photographs beautifully. It sets a mood that guests feel the moment they walk in.
Before you spend thousands on elaborate florals ask yourself — do I have my lighting and candles handled? Because the answer to that question matters more than almost any other design decision you will make.
What Brides Overspend On That Guests Never Notice
Wedding favors.
I say this with so much love but please hear me — guests do not remember wedding favors. Unless you are doing something genuinely unique and personal that ties directly to your story as a couple, the small trinkets and treats that get placed at every seat are almost universally left on tables or forgotten in cars.
It is one of the first places I suggest scaling back when a budget is tight. That money is almost always better spent somewhere else.
Where to Always Invest No Matter What
Three vendors that are always worth the investment regardless of your budget:
Your photographer. These images are the only permanent record of your wedding day. They live forever. Cutting corners here means living with the results forever too.
Your coordinator. Every problem solved before it reached you. Every moment protected so you could be fully present. Every vendor managed so you did not have to be. This investment protects every other investment you have made in your wedding day.
Your DJ and emcee. Your DJ controls the energy of your entire reception. Your emcee keeps your guests engaged and your night flowing. These two roles together are what turn a beautiful wedding into an unforgettable one.
Invest in these three. Scale back elsewhere if you need to. But do not compromise on the vendors who execute the experience.
The Candle and Lighting Secret
I tell every single one of my brides this and I will tell you too.
The more candles and lighting you have in your space the more it transforms the entire room. Candles on every table. String lights overhead. Uplighting on the walls. Warm dim light replacing harsh bright light.
This single design decision changes everything about how your wedding feels — and it photographs beautifully. A wedding that looks expensive on camera is almost always one that got the lighting right. That is the secret. It is not the florals. It is not the charger plates. It is the light.
How I Help Brides Create Luxury in Any Budget
When a bride comes to me with a vision that feels bigger than her budget I do not dismiss the vision. I take what she wants, I look at her venue, and I figure out how to create the best possible version of that experience within what she actually has to work with.
It starts with understanding what luxury means to her specifically. What does she want guests to feel when they walk in. What is the one thing she absolutely cannot compromise on. Then we design around those answers.
Luxury is not about excess. It is about intention. And intentional design is something you can create at almost any price point when you know where to focus.
