Where Do You Even Start When Planning a Wedding
The night my husband proposed, I posted about it on every platform possible and celebrated all night with our closest friends. The next morning we had a family dinner, purchased our wedding domain, and my husband designed our entire wedding website from scratch. We were moving. We were excited. We were ready.
And then two weeks later I found myself sitting on the floor of my bedroom, surrounded by centerpiece photos I had pulled up on my laptop, and I just started crying.
Not because I wasn't happy. Not because I didn't want to get married. But because in that moment it hit me — there are so many decisions to make. And I had no idea where to actually start.
If that sounds familiar, keep reading.
The First Thing I Tell Every New Bride
When a bride comes to me with no idea where to begin, the first thing I tell her is this — there is no need to rush right into planning.
Depending on when your wedding is, you can take a few weeks or even a full month to just soak up being engaged. To enjoy the ring. To enjoy your partner. To enjoy this season before it becomes a to-do list.
When you are ready to start — and I mean really start — here is what actually needs to happen first:
Pick a date or at least two or three options you are considering. Set a realistic budget based on what you can actually afford and who is contributing financially. Determine your guest count range before you look at a single venue. Choose your venue. Decide whether you want a wedding planner, a day of coordinator, or whether you plan to do this on your own. And identify your priorities — what matters most to both of you about this day.
That is your real starting point. Not a Pinterest board. Not a venue tour. Not a centerpiece decision at 11pm on the floor of your bedroom.
Why Brides Go to Pinterest First
I get it. When you do not know where to start, you go looking for inspiration and guidance. Pinterest feels like the answer because it is visual and it is immediate and it shows you exactly what a wedding can look like.
But here is the problem. When you start with inspiration before you have a budget, a guest count, or a clear sense of your own priorities — you end up building a vision around someone else's wedding. A wedding that might have cost three times what you have to spend. A wedding that might not even feel like you once the excitement of the photos wears off.
Pinterest is a tool. A great one. But it works best when you already know what you are working with — not before.
What Happens When You Skip the Foundation
I have seen it happen more times than I can count. A couple gets engaged, they are excited, they start booking things — and within a few months everything is chaotic and over budget and they are no longer excited. They are stressed. And more often than not, they are unsatisfied with decisions they cannot undo.
Not because they did anything wrong. But because they started without a foundation.
When you know what you want out of your wedding day — really know, not just aesthetically but emotionally — every decision after that becomes clearer. You know where to spend and where to save. You know which vendors matter most. You know when to say yes and when to say no. Everything becomes easier when you start with the right question.
And the right question is simply this: what do I actually want out of this day?
Not what does it look like on Pinterest. Not what does my mom want. Not what did my best friend do at her wedding.
What do YOU want. What do both of you want. That is where everything begins.
